By the same token, the beer drinkers on Cheers are the most sympathetic characters, part of the "boys club": "Beer drinking is the 'secret code' that indicates to the audience which members of the club are 'cool' and serve as role models" (Hundley 266). The role model status that is conferred by what Cheers does portray is indirectly confirmed by what it does not show, specifically:
serious economic, social, or emotional consequences due to regular or excessive beer consumption . . . [which] invites viewers to dissassociate [sic] the possible consequences . . . and
