Findings revealed that women who spent part of their childhood in single-parent families (owing to divorce) were more likely to marry and bear children early, give birth before marriage, and have their own marriages break up. However, among Black women, early marriage was unrelated to family background. Results were said to be consistent with a socialization hypothesis, which argues that parental role models and parental supervision are the major factors in determining offspring's future family-formation orientation.
