Behavior is the external reaction of an organism in response to a stimulus in its environment, and in animals is mediated by the brain and its complex system of nerves and neurotransmitters. In plants, the control is more dependent on chemical reactions to the environment.

2. The "scientific method" is a systematic, ordered approach to the gathering of data and the solving of problems (Mosby, 1994). The basic approach is a statement of the problem, followed by the statement of a hypothesis. An experimental method is established to help prove or disprove the hypothesis. The results of the experiment are observed, and conclusions are drawn from the observed results. The conclusions may tend to uphold or to refute the hypothesis.

Suppose someone wondered what was killing butterflies in their garden, and noticed the butterflies died after the plants they fed on were watered with a hose. The statement of the problem would be, "Butterflies die after feeding on freshly watered plants." The hypothesis would be that something in the water or the hose used was killing them. The experiment would be to water the plants with water from different sources. If the butterflies only died when watered with water from the original hose
