Perhaps Pepper is wrong on some of the details of the case. Perhaps he does not finally convince the reader that the people who he believes did the shooting actually did the shooting. However, the book is thorough and full of details, and the credentials of the author are impressive, and this reader now believes after reading the book that there was a conspiracy to kill King and to frame Ray.

The book is specifically a study of one murder case in 1968, but it is also a history of a particular era of the United States which was full of violence, uncertainty and much political and social activism. The book inevitably deals with much of that turmoil as related to King and the assassination, and his examination of the local and federal institutions involved in some way in the assassination and the cover-up make the reader begin to fear his own governm
