Evaluations of instructional effectiveness indicated that students in the computer assisted instruction program demonstrated a good conceptual grasp of subject matter. It was also determined that their difficulties were identified quickly and that they often worked in pairs, which provided mutual support. In addition, it was found that faculty were able to interact individually with students, observe the learning process closely, and intervene directly and immediately.

Payne (1986) used a case study approach to evaluate a two semester computer assisted instruction project in an all minority high school. It was noted that the use of PLATO software with Control Data microcomputers brought about modest achievement advantages, higher internal locus of control, more positive attitudes toward school and specific course subjects than non-computer assisted instruction with groups
