Resistance to Hitler in Germany

was being waged. The most famous attempt, of course, was that of July 20, 1944. This attempt was the subject of rather intense planning and it was stopped by the luck of Hitler's positioning at the table, under which the bomb exploded.

There have been several books written about the German resistance in the nearly fifty years since the end of the war. Most of these books can be placed in one of either two categories. First, there are the books which provide an essentially straightforward narrative account of the various plots and organizations. Second, there are the books which attempt to explain the resistance movements and their members in terms of moral or practical motivation. While the first group of books concentrate on explaining who, what, and where, the second group focuses on why.
