Hamilton did believe that avarice could be transmuted into something beneficial. He disdained the pursuit of material rewards himself, but he did dream of creating a modern, thriving, capitalist political economy and set about creating it if possible. Democracy disturbed Hamilton because it threatened property and order and also because it bred the most despicable kind of leadership. His interest was in creating and protecting a federal system, and his view was geared more to the needs of the North than the South.
