Shakespeare's The Tempest & Henry IV

Ousted from his reign by his perfidious brother, Prospero is drawn to this island space by ocean currents that draw men toward it "by accident most strange, by providence divine, by bountiful fortune" (I.ii.178, 159,178). In this remote space Prospero will be forced to do battle with his inner demons which psychoanalytic critics might claim were externalized as Ariel and Caliban. Here Prospero can be seen attempting to move beyond the divisions imposed by a division between spirit and body, a mind-body dualism. Unlike Miranda who appears as a pure innocence seeking to better herself and the world, Prospero is caught trying to right himself against a world which has so cruelly injured him. Miranda's fortune will ask her to embrace a greater portion of the world while Prospero's will be to recalibrate himself against what has already been experienced.

Falstaff emerges as one of Shakespeare's most memorable rogues. Although Prince Hal has enjoyed his humorous companionship, delighting in Falstaff's indulgent excesses, he will need to surpass his friend's acute limitations in order to serve as a beneficent ruler.
