Catholic Response to Liberation Theology

Liberation theology is an emerging school of theologians,

predominantly but not exclusively Roman Catholic and Latin

American. The main issue is the definition of salvation in

terms of recognizable human experience not excluding the

social, economic, cultural, political dimension. Liberation

theology emerges from Christian experience of Third World

struggles in our generation with the understanding that

history is one, not divisible into secular and salvation

history. Liberation theology is cautiously and critically

related to Marxist economic analysis. It is partially based

on theology of hope and political theology and claims to go

further in its analysis than these European theologies
