rces of energy are eagerly sought to reduce our dependence on oil. There are a number of such alternative sources, each with its advantages and its disadvantages, and each involving a new technology to be adapted to the needs of the public. Science has sought a solution to the energy problem for decades and has yet to find one, but as number of potential technological changes are being considered. In the meantime, the public has been made aware of the scope of the problem, has been enlisted in conserving energy so present sources will not run out, and has been encouraged to seek and use alternative technologies whenever possible. The public will not respond in a big way, however, until a truly reliable alternative source of energy is found, one that does not rely on the burning of fossil fuels.

Nuclear power was once offered as the limitless source of energy that would create a new age, but it has not developed that way. For one thing, there are major concerns about safety with nuclear power, as well as with the related matter of the disposal of dangerous nuclear waste produced in the energy creation process. Most federal funds for energy research and development have been spent on nuclear power, but the return has been far less than expected. Protests have prevented many nuclear facilities from either being started or from going on line to produce energy.
