Bioterrorism

the 1990s, the Aum Shinrikyo cult in Japan carried out a series of biological attacks using anthrax and botulism toxins; these attacks resulted in no casualties. In 1994 and 1995, however, the cult released the nerve gas sarin on two occasions: first near a public building, where seven died and 150 required treatment, and later at a subway station, where twelve died and an additional 5,000 required treatment.

3. In 1996 at a medical lab in Dallas, Texas, one Diane Thompson contaminated workroom pastries with dysentery germs, causing 12 casualties and four hospitalizations, but no deaths.

4. In September and October of 2001, Bacillus anthracis spores were mailed to high-profile political and media figures. In all 22 people who were in the chain of distribution--from media employees to US Mail employees--were infected, and five people died. The identity of the murderer or murderers is unknown (Zilinskas & Pate, 2002; Zilinskas, 2003).
