In religions where there is no such personal God, the individual must prepare himself or herself, often through rigorous methods, to be in a position to gain eternal freedom. There are also different emphases in different religions on whether salvation is something that occurs after death or whether it is something that can be attained in life. Buddhism is a good example of a religion with a more personal bent. Buddhism is a flexible religion able to adapt to differing circumstances. It places an emphasis on individual thought and individual perception that contributes to this flexibility, making it possible for the believer to worship anywhere on his or her own when it is necessary to do so. Yet, Buddhism is still a community and best practiced in a community setting. It offers a guide to behavior and to life choices without being dogmatic, and accepting a deity is not a requirement.

The Christian conception of the soul is of something which survives death and is carried to a different realm, to a Heaven or a Hell depending on the role played by the individual in this world, to whether he or she has experienced salvation through Christ, and so on. Salvation in the Christian conception refers to something that occurs to the soul after death. Other terms are also used to identify salvation in the Christian conception--redemption, justification. Justification is the term used by the apostle Paul and has come to refer to the subjective side of the process of redemption.
