Taylor's arguments focused on mountain building; he emphasized the need for drift in order to compress the Alpine and Himalayan chains. In contrast, Wegener was influenced by similarities between the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Although Taylor published his theories first, he did not actively pursue the subject. Therefore, it was Wegener who eventually became the chief proponent of continental drift.
