As she states in the Preface, this book was written to clarity environmental issues "and to re-establish a sense of reason and balance with respect to the environmental and modern technology" (Ray, 1990, p. xii).

Ray divides the book into four parts, the first being a look at what technology has given humans and the importance of science in the evolution of all that makes life so convenient today. The second and third sections discuss specific environmental issues, with the latter dedicated to nuclear issues, and a summary of the facts known about each problem. Part four presents Ray's thoughts for the future. It Is here that Ray addresses the fact that it is through the human's brain that we are able to rise above the other species on the planet and survive anywhere on earth. It is the technology that has evolved from this intelligence that has made this possible. Now, many believe it is about to destroy nature.

Ray, who wrote the book at the age of seventy-five, also brings a long-view of history, of where the world was when she was born and all the amenities that are available today. Consequently, Ray has an appreciation of what technology can do as she presents facts disputing or at least questioning each of the argument
