Hotel Industry in Los Angeles Area

This research examined the hotel industry in the Los Angeles area. The emphasis in this research was on human resource management within the industry, with a focus on employment levels and employee earnings.

It was found that employment in the hotel industry in Los Angeles increased by 3.78 times from 1960 through 1990. Population growth in Southern California, however, was only 93 percent over the same period. With respect to mean employee earnings, the growth for hotel employees from 1960 through 1990 was more than four times, yet the mean annual earnings for hotel employees was only 54 percent of the Los Angeles-Long Beach metropolitan statistical area mean. It was also found that the proportion of supervisory to non-supervisory workers in the Los Angeles Hotel industry has increased substantially since 1960. Supervisory earnings also increased by a greater proportion than did non-supervisory wages.

This research examines the hotel industry in the Los Angeles area. As used in this research, hotel industry refers to all commercial, temporary lodging establishments, and the Los Angeles area refers to the Los Angeles-Long Beach metropolitan statistical area.

Major Human Resources Problems Confronting the Hotel Industry Human resources represent a continual problem for the hotel industry. In Los Angeles, human resource management in the hotel industry is complicated by the inflow of immigrants into the area. On one level, this immigration provides hotel industry with a steady supply of low-cost workers. In many instances, however, absentee problems involving these immigrant workers have proved to be far more significant than those involving domestic workers. Rising wages and living standards in Los Angeles, however, have priced most domestic workers out of the hotel industry labor pool. A major human resources problem associated with the hiring of immigrant workers as hotel is associated with language. In this context, a major difficulty involves communication between the immigrant workers and both the domestic management and workers.
