This research examined the hotel industry in the Los Angeles area. The emphasis in this research was on human resource management within the industry, with a focus on employment levels and employee earnings.
It was found that employment in the hotel industry in Los Angeles increased by 3.78 times from 1960 through 1990. Population growth in Southern California, however, was only 93 percent over the same period. With respect to mean employee earnings, the growth for hotel employees from 1960 through 1990 was more than four times, yet the mean annual earnings for hotel employees was only 54 percent of the Los Angeles-Long Beach metropolitan statistical area mean. It was also found that the proportion of supervisory to non-supervisory workers in the Los Angeles Hotel industry has increased substantially since 1960. Supervisory earnings also increased by a greater proportion than did non-supervisory wages.
This research examines the hotel industry in the Los Angeles area. As used in this research, hotel industry refers to all commercial, temporary lodging establishments, and the Los Angeles area refers to the Los Angeles-Long Beach metropolitan statistical area.
The findings of this research are presented in three separate discussions. A survey of contemporary hotel industry operations is presented in the first discussion, while the major human resources problems confronting the hotel industry are considered in the second discussion, and data pertaining to employment and earnings by hotel industry employees in the Los Angeles area are reviewed in the third discussion.
