The documentary film was developed to show reality and comment on it directly. The cinéma-verité was a more specific approach which attempted to present reality as its own interpretation, without the strong sensibility of the filmmaker shaping material. Instead, the filmmaker was to present a direct cinema, placing the viewer in the position of direct observer of the action. This approach was much influenced, as was the war-time documentary movement, by television and news photography as well as by new lighter equipment which made it possible to carry the camera and to get more directly into the action. Cinéma-verité is differentiated from direct cinema by its use of probing direct interviews. The intent is always to achieve intimacy and immediacy, a truth and directness not possible in film before this time.
