As battle approaches, the young man increasingly becomes aware of the fact that he is swept up in forces far beyond his control:

The youth was confused. As he ran forward with his companions he tried hard to think, but all he knew was that if he fell down those coming behind would step on him. All his energy seemed to be needed to guide him through the darkness. He felt carried away by the mob.
