We claim to want ethical behavior and to encourage whistleblowers to assure that we get it, but we are all too willing to blame the messenger when bad news emerges and to allow the messenger to be punished even if we accept what he or she says. Whistleblowing should be an ethical thing to do when some real wrong is being hidden from the public it might harm, but we are still torn by the idea that the snitch is prima facie someone not to be trusted. Ambivalence about whistleblowing is pervasive so that even those who support the idea may have reservations about the whistleblower and his or her motivations and actions.
