sion. At 1782, Justice Brennan said that "there were clear signs . . . that some of the partners reacted negatively to Hopkins' personality because she was a woman." He referred specifically to a comment by partner Kelly that she is 'macho', by partner Coffey that she "may have overcompensated for being a woman," and by partner Hoffman that she should take "a course in charm school." Justice Brennan at 1782 took exception to advice given to Hopkins by partner Beyer that she should "walk . . . talk . . . [and] dress more femininely, wear make-up, have her hair styled, and wear jewelry."

At 1791 Justice Brennan took exception to the male psychology of "an employer who objects to aggressiveness in women but whose provisions require this trait [and] places women in an intolerable and impermissible catch 22." In her foreword to Hopkins' book on the subject, feminist Mary Walsh developed this thought further:
