Philosophy responds that there is Providence but that the foreknowledge of God does not impose necessity upon the future. If we can choose without being forced to be predestined, then we have freedom. Philosophy says that we can do this even if there is foreknowledge because foreknowledge does not impose any predestination on things. The discussion becomes quite complex and is structured around fine distinctions between what is predestined and what is not, whether foreknowledge imposes necessity, and so on. For Boethius, foreknowledge does not impose necessity and freedom of choice is preserved for human beings. He refers to different levels of knowing, with God at the highest level of knowing and man at a lower.
