facilitating the continued development of mastery, competence, self-esteem and control.
Gast, Denyes, Campbell and Hartweg (1989) state that Orem's model is essentially one of providing care to enable the patient to care for him- or herself. According to these authors, dimensions of self-care which nurse intervention facilitates include not only assisting patients' medically but also bolstering their decision-making skills and the degree of value they place on health care behaviors.
Based on Orem's theory, which has been supported as valid in a number of studies (e.g. Frey & Denyes, 1989; Denyes, 1988; Weis, 1988; Silva, 1986), this study holds that not only will the designed intervention operate to reduce and/or eliminate bulimic behavior, it will also operate to increase the empowerment variables of self-worth and personal control. Thus, the following hypotheses will be tested in the proposed study.
Hypothesis 1 - When compared to a control group, the cognitive-behavioral intervention group will be observed to significantly reduce bulimic behaviors.
Hypothesis 2 - Pretest measures of bulimic behavior in the cognitive-behavioral intervention group will evidence significantly more bulimic behavior than will posttest measures.
Hypothesis 3 - When compared to a control group, the cognitive behavioral group will be observed to significantly increase feelings of self-worth.
Hypothesis 4 - Pretest measures of self-worth in the cognitive-behavioral intervention group will evidence significantly lower self-worth than will posttest measures.
Hypothesis 5 - When compared to a control group, the cognitive behavioral group will be observ
