r, 1998b, pp. 10-14). That listing should be emended to note each state that allows calculators (of specific types) into their exam rooms.

Book 1: Civil Engineering. Civil engineering topics are covered in seven "chapters": geotechnical (engineering), structural analysis, transportation, airport design, pavement design, environmental engineering, and hydrology (Potter, 1998b, pp. 15-108). Students will find this mix heavy on paved surfaces and light on beam reactions or bending moments in structures. A Practice Exam for Civil Engineers is given (Potter, 1998b, pp. 109-28), and solutions for each problem on the practice test are detailed (Potter, 1998b, pp. 129-38).

Three problems (prior to the Practice Exam) were selected randomly for checking. Example 3.5 deals with Horizontal Curves (for roadways). The problem is a design for 2 roads that are perpendicular. The first question (of 8) about this road design is, "What is the Intersection of Angle?" (Maleck, 1998, p. 71). One has no idea. What is that? An intersection of an angle. The answer, revealed on the next page, thank goodness, is: "Since the roads are perpendicular, the Angle of Intersection [note the word reversal] is 90(." The remaining mathematics and descriptions are correct for this example (Maleck, 1998, pp. 72-3).

Example 5.1 addresses Pavement Design; and the solution given to Problem 3 about a given traffic situation says, "For the 220,000-pound single-axle, LEF = 2.18" (Maleck, 1998, p. 86). Actually, this was given as a 22,000-pound single-axle on the rear of a vehicle (Maleck, 1998, p. 85), and the LEF should be between 0.36 (for the 14,000-pound front single-axle) and 0.857 (for the middle 32,000-pound tandem-axle). So the remainder of this problem (#3), as given, is WRONG. Also, as in other places, the term used here called ESAL (Maleck, 1998, pp
