The recommended treatment for sensorineural hearing loss is to provide the patient with a hearing aid that amplifies sounds. Counseling as to how to use a hearing aid is also recommended, for not only must a patient become used to the mechanics of the device but in most cases he or she must also adjust to a change in self-perception. Since hearing loss is so generally associated with growing older, beginning to use a hearing aid may make a person feel suddenly old and therefore less vital or important. Counseling can help alleviate these fears. Likewise, good counseling will make clear the limitations of hearing aids so that a patient will be pleased with the improvement in hearing rather than disappointed that the result is not perfect.
