The only national minority in the GDR was the Lusatian Sorbs who lived in the counties of Dresden and Cottbus. They were descendants of the Slav people who settled in the region in the early Middle Ages. In earlier times, the Sorbs were often repressed, especially during the reign of the Nazis. But when East Germany was formally established, their rights were written into the constitution (Reich, 1966, p. 15).
