What the writer could write about was shaped by the time period in which he lived, and in British times the English language was prevalent and brought with it a new type of literature and new forms such as the short story and the novel. This was a time of exciting new possibilities for the writer, and many writers took the opportunity to try to teach lessons in a didactic fashion.
