Tharenou, Latimer, and Conroy (1994, pp. 899-931) tested models of situational and individual influences on managerial advancement within Australian organizations for both men and women. The major organizational problem to which this investigation was related is the issue of gender equality in human resource management. The issue of gender equality is at the forefront of contemporary human resource management.

The authors presented in the article the findings of a literature review relevant to the determinants of managerial advancement within organizations. The authors reported that relatively recently comprehensive theories of managerial advancement have been developed for women. Within this context, the authors mused that such theories also might be useful in relation to men as no comprehensive theories of advancement have been developed for men (Tharenou, Latimer, & Conroy, 1994, pp. 899-931).
