The Americans with Disabilities Act

fast-food industry, are considered "public accommodations," and are prohibited from discriminating against people with disabilities either in hiring practices or in service. Those with disabilities cannot be refused service, and new buildings must be accessible to the disabled. Physical access changes to existing buildings are required only if such changes are "readily achievable." Public accommodations undergoing renovation must make the renovated area accessible (Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities, 1990, p. 85).

Public accommodations are required to provide auxiliary aids and services in order that a disabled person has access to the available goods and services. Examples of this accommodation include large print menus or someone available to read menus to customers. Restaurants outside the fast-food industry can overcome having menus printed in Braille by providing someone on staff able to read the menu to a blind customer.
