Life and Work of Ernest Hemingway

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Established as one of the major American writers of his age, Ernest Hemingway is perhaps one of the most imitated writers in recent history. However, he was, and still is, one of the most controversial figures in American literature. Having had a disquieting childhood, Hemingway had grown to question and wonder at the nature of the world around him. This is perhaps why his later life was marked by many voluntary travels and adventures. A most important initial adventure that set the stage for his later life, was his participation in World War I and subsequent wounding in battle. His outlook on life having been changed drastically by the experience of war, Hemingway returned with many conflicts to resolve and many ideas to ponder. Because of his training as a writer, he found writing about his experiences or ideas to be a natural extension of himself. Created mostly out of events from the Pamplona fiesta of 1925, this work observes that life is much like the cleansing of the soul that is associated with a fiesta (Noble 115-120). Things continued to go well for Hemingway as far as literary things were concerned, but he began to estrange his friends by his boisterous nature. He destroyed his marriage with his first wife in order to marry another woman, suffered a number of accidents that left him in poor physical condition for a time, and was increasingly antiintellectual. It was almost like life had set about to punish Hemingway for his overbearing nature. His literary career only improved as his social difficulties worsened. A Farewell to Arms and his later For Whom the Bell Tolls were extremely popular. A Farewell to Arms was Hemingway's way to tell about and resolve his experiences with war and postwar E
