aBerge (1993) goes on to note that the likelihood is strong that the perspectives of neither camp are wholly right or wholly wrong. Instead, he proposes a "middle way," or synthesis of the two seemingly antipathetical views. Specifically, LaBerge proposes that dreams have both psychological and physical determinants.

LaBerge's (1993) view of dream theory serves as the conceptual foundation of this study for two reasons. First, the view is in accord with one of the major research assumptions of the historical analysis. This assumption, according to Kiess and Bloomquist (1985), holds that even seemingly discrepant conceptions, perceptions, or theories of a given phenomenon arise out of a common source if viewed from the historical perspective.
