Humanae vitae, the encyclical letter of Pope Paul VI was another important event in Catholic moral theology. This letter reiterated the Catholic view opposing birth control and set the debate regarding moral norms. Catholic moral theology has dealt with a wide range of social issues including public policy, third world issues, feminism, and environmental concerns: "the Catholic tradition stands for the need to have some type of possible dialogue and criticism that represents all human beings on our planet" (134).

Chapter 10: "Correlational Theology and the Chicago School"

Theologian David Tracy proposes a paradigm for correlational theology. His emphasis is on conversation. No theology can ever be considered final because there are two principal sources of Christian theology: Christian texts and common human experience and language. A conversation that is open to discovery is required: "Theology is a public exercise; it is concerned with all aspects of our reality" (141). Truth manifests itself through an interaction between the object's disclosure and concealment and the recipient's recognition.
