Domestic violence is a problem with consequences that range in severity and victims tend to feel angry, alone, and hopeless. This group supported each other as they vented their emotions and rehearsed new ways of coping. The group leader would facilitate role-playing or another technique to help all members understand and rehearse more assertive ways of dealing with situations. Group members and the leader provided constant reinforcement.

Impressions of the group were that it appeared to be very effective and the group leader seemed to be effective in facilitating group discussion and imparting skills for increased coping. At times a group member would relate a story that was profoundly evoking of emotions in other members. Boundaries were observed and enforced by the group leader as was particularly evident during these emotional explosions. If one group member attempted to join in the expression the group leader would limit this effort. Hate for the abuser was replaced with more effective forms of feedback and coping.

The group members appeared to respond favorably to the group leader. Even in times when the leader was required to put a stop to negative expressions of emotions, the members responded with inner reflection. It was clear that this group had been intact for some time and the members had learned ways of dealing with the group process. Since the group functioned to such a high degree it is concluded that the group leader was effective and successful in facilitating the group process.

Findings from a discussion with the group leader pointed out that the leader was very knowledgeable and dedicated to the group process.
