For the marijuana user the drug provides a high in the form of relaxation, euphoria, and/or introspection, depending on his/her state of mind. It is the least ethical of all the drugs and has been the subject of legalization efforts over the years. However, in relation to its effect on memory, marijuana, especially with continued use, has dramatic short-term effect. Loss of memory regarding immediate details, including the ability to function normally within the work or day-to-day living environment, is interrupted by the use of the drug. Its high produces a "laid-back" sensation that seems to numb the brain's memory capabilities. Once use is discontinued, this reaction fades away.

Alcoholic intake can effect memory with both short-term and long term use. Bodily reactions such as vomiting and behavioral actions such as staggering and slurred speech are most commonly involved with drunkeness. These reactions reflect alcohol's depressant nature on the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord.
