The pieces she chose to present were some red pieces from the upper Pecos valley in east-central New Mexico, a piece of Hewell pottery from Gillsville, Georgia, and a piece created by the famous Maria Martinez of the pueblo San Ildefonso. I noticed differences and similarities among these three types of ceramics. All of them were functional pieces, and all of them were quite beautiful and well-crafted. The instructor mentioned that it was important to the creators of these pieces to create a unity between usefulness and beauty. This concept was clearly evident in the pieces that she selected.

In terms of time, the oldest was the Pecos pieces, next the San Ildefonso piece, and finally the more current folk art from the Hewell family. I did not see any trend in this chronological view. The two Native American types were more alike, even though centuries apart, than the Hewell piece.
