The necessary corollary to pornography's myth of the female's instant availability is the myth of the male's perpetual readiness: "Excessive emphasis on the genitals as the sole source of sexual satisfaction and on the orgasm as the goal of all sexual activity has narrowed the range of male sensuality" (Brod, 1984). Not only do males view their sexual partners as less than ideal, but also their high expectations do not allow for the possibility of their own sexual failure. This often becomes a source of male insecurity and sexual dysfunction. Repeated exposure to sexually explicit stimuli may also have a cumulative effect that can alter responsiveness to subsequent sexual cures. In a study by Kelley & Musialowski (1986), satiation effects in response to pornographic stimuli have been shown to result in diminished responsiveness with repeated exposure.
