In the two years after termination of the program, 15.1% and 5.2% respectively, said they had smoked in the previous week (Perry et al., 1980). Program effects seem to have endured for at least two years beyond the end of the program.

Botvin et al. (1980) have reported a more general approach to life skills training for prevention of cigarette smoking. This program consists of 10 weekly sessions designed to teach skills necessary to resist social pressures to smoke, to develop students' autonomy and thereby reduce their susceptibility to indirect social pressures to smoke, to develop self esteem and self confidence, and to provide a means of coping with anxiety. Hence, the approach begun by Botvin goes beyond teaching the skills specific to smoking avoidance.
