Men who abuse women are generally characterized as being inclined toward anger and jealousy. However, "though they may be terrifying, they often have about them an aura of helplessness, fear, inadequacy, and insecurity" (Martin 45). Such men are generally unable to express their emotions in a straightforward manner. Therefore, they often resort to the battering of women whenever they experience difficulties in the course of their day-to-day lives. Often, their attack behavior is triggered by some inconsequential thing that the women either did or supposedly did. Some writers have indicated that such a violent reaction against women may occur in men who feel overly vulnerable to dependent in their love relationship. These feelings of dependency often lead to resentment and hostility because the men believe that it is not masculine for them to be "controlled" in such a way by a woman (Nicarthy 7).
