These stress situations include unemployment, extremely high or low rates of input of stimuli, natural disasters, combat in war, conflicting and irreconcilable expectations on a job, and poverty, to name a few situations.

Third, stress focuses on the perceptions that people have of the demands of situations. Situations have been rated by the amount of readjustment demanded. Research utilizing this perspective generally asks individuals to rate the amount of readjustment required and the frequency of occurrence of the situations. The frequency of the situations is multiplied by the adjustment ratings and the products are summed. The sums are called Social Readjustment Scores and have been correlated with forms of strain including coronary heart
