Since one of the humanistic problems involved in psychotherapy is that there be a positive relationship between the therapist, client, and the therapy itself, other authors have pointed to the fact that music and art therapies remove some of the negative preconceptions present in many other forms of therapy. There seem to be at least four factors that determine whether psychotherapy will work, all of which give credence to the use of music therapy as an alternative method (Feder & Feder, 1981, pp. 50-51):

1. The severity of the disorder--The more severe the disorder, the smaller the likelihood that therapy will work. With music therapy, however, the chances for success through expression are enhanced.
