which was known as the Castiles. In addition to becoming popular in their own home town, the Castiles were soon able to play at the Cafe Wha, a well-known club in the Greenwich Village district of New York City (Ewen 378). As a young adult, Springsteen briefly attended Ocean City County Community College in Tom's River, New Jersey. However, his studies as a college student did not last long. Within a few months, Springsteen dropped out of college in order to devote all of his time to his musical career. In later interviews, Springsteen reported that he had gotten into an argument with a counselor at the school and that he had been asked to leave "for dressing like a biker" (Lombardi 142).

In 1969, Springsteen's family moved to California. However, he stayed behind in Freehold in order to continue playing music with his friends there. For the next few years, Springsteen played in a variety of bands with a variety of different band members. In addition to the castiles, Springsteen's bands during that time included the Rogues, the Steel Mill, and Dr. Zoom and the Sonic Boom.
