"group norm" theory of prejudice (Killian, 1970, p. 187). He sees race prejudice as being related to a social fact--ethnocentrism (Killian, 1970, p. 185). Feelings of antipathy toward other groups and a feeling of the inherent superiority of one's own group appear to be generic features of race prejudice. Yet, ethnocentrism is not the decisive factor in racial prejudice. The collective image and feelings that constitute race prejudice are forged in a long, complicated social process (Killian, 1970, p. 187).

This image building takes place primarily in the public arena, not in the immediate experiences between individual members of the two groups. Blumer proposed racial prejudice would be most pronounced and serious in a social situation with three features: (1) two groups live together as parts of a unitary society; (2) the acceptance of the subordinate group is limited, and it is assigned to an inferior status; and (3) the dominant groups fears the subordinate group is not keeping to its place.
