ALGERIAN REVOLUTION
This is an excerpt from the paper...
This research paper discusses and analyzes the reasons for the outbreak and success of the Algerian revolution of 1954-1962.The origins of the Algerian revolt lay in the development of a strong sense of nationalism and opposition to French colonial rule which devastated the economic and social structure of native life. The war itself welded together disparate elements of Algerian urban and rural society, despite serious threats to their unity and numerous rifts. The peasantry, especially in the Kabyle and Aures mountain areas in eastern Algeria, which were dominantly Berber (non-Arab) in origin, bore the brunt of the savage fighting and contributed greatly to the success of the revolution. The violent legacy of the war has been reflected in the instability of the Algerian regime and its evolution in a more moderate direction. The Berber (non-Arab) population of present day Algeria has a long history of bitter resistance to foreign rule by the Romans, Arabs, Turks and others. After the French took control in 1830, they imposed a colonial regime which disrupted traditional patterns of economic subsistence and the social structure and largely made the natives second-class citizens in their own country.
