That is, in Augustus Comte's work, one of Comte's main theories corresponds to Rousseau's original concept that explains general will as "that of consensus as the essential basis of the cohesion or integration of a society" (Parsons, 1961, p. 92). But, while Durkheim was obviously influenced by Comte's theories of consensus, Durkheim also took the Rousseau/Comte analysis a step further when he showed how problems regarding how a society's consensus must "be conceived at a very high level of generality" and thus could "effectively control the varieties of behavior of many different types of collective and individual units of a social structure in many different and varying situations" (Parsons, 1961, p. 92).
