And, although the percentage of women in these positions increased 14.6% percent between 1979 and 1989, women gained an average wage increase of less than $2 an hour (Mahar 54). Meanwhile, from 1973 to 1991, men who had attained a college degree plus two years of postgraduate education earned a steady average of $21 an hour. On the other hand, women who had attained a college degree plus two years of postgraduate education saw their average wages in real dollars decrease from $18.01 an hour in 1973 to $16.57 in 1991.
