29.7 Hematologic studies of blood are important in the diagnosis of disease because many diseases cause changes in the composition of blood, and taking a blood sample and analyzing it is a relatively simple and cost-effective way of making a preliminary diagnosis of many disease (Cohen and Wood, 2000, 191). Anemia can be caused by a deficiency in the number of red cells, a defect in their ability to transport oxygen because of an iron deficiency, and other causes, which can be diagnosed by examining the red blood cells. Polycythemia is an increase in the number of red cells in the circulation which may indicate a problem in the hemopoietic system.
