e conveys the messages and basically functions as the arranger of the secret-marriage intrigue. The Nurse is present, too, after Romeo has been banished and is desperately fearful that Juliet hates him for Tybalt's death. In fact, the Nurse has made a special trip to Friar Laurence's cell to arrange for him to come to Juliet's room to consummate the marriage (III.iii).

Friar Laurence is another facilitator of the secret marriage, which he reluctantly performs at II.vi. At IV.i he also arranges the stratagem whereby Juliet will fall into the deathlike sleep that will enable Romeo to carry her away from the tomb to Mantua: "Take thou this vial, being then in bed,

And this distilled liquor drink thou of" (IV.i). And all will (he thinks) be well. Friar Laurence reappears just after Romeo's death in the tomb (V.iii) and attempts, unsuccessfully, to lead the newly awakened Juliet out of the tomb, finally leaving her to her suicide because, as he says of the approaching party pursuing Romeo "I dare no longer stay
