Ego identity comes into play during adolescence, as all the skills acquired during childhood are suddenly called into question because of all the changes taking place. The child is becoming a young adult, and different things are expected of him/her both socially and sexually. Hormonal changes are taking place, and causing instinctual responses to occur.
