Based on the above description of short term study abroad programs, it is evident that they have many advantages that are especially pertinent for the education of young people today. During the last two decades, educators and policymakers have begun to pay increased attention to the area studies and foreign languages for elementary and secondary school students. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages' brochure entitled "Standards for Foreign Language Learning: Preparing for the 21st Century" clearly encapsulates the importance for students to engage in study abroad. Although the focus is on foreign language study, this statement of philosophy can certainly apply to the study of the cultural, geographical, economic and historical aspects of a country:
