Gender Stereotypes and Children

broad and comprehensive perspective was adopted to explore the nature of the relationship between gender stereotypes in children's books and children's perceptions of gender. Apart from including research studies that dealt with gender stereotypes in children's books, those that explored alternative factors that influence children's perceptions of gender were also selected. Essentially, in order to determine whether a relationship exists between gender stereotypes in children's books and a children's perception of gender, it is important to identify extraneous factors that may exert an even greater impact on children's perceptions of gender than books.

Based on the aforementioned criteria, three categories of research studies were selected for this qualitative review of literature:

Research studies that examined the presentation of gender stereotypes in books;

Research studies that examined how children's gender perceptions are shaped by gender stereotypes in books and language; and
