In the case of young students, reading aloud can be an effective strategy for cultivating a passion for reading (MCPS, 2000). Young students who are immersed in an environment of reading experiences are exposed to "comprehensible input" that is vital in helping them to develop the understanding of concepts and "academic vocabulary" (Mohr, 2004, p. 22). Since many first graders are just beginning to read, they will benefit from the additional reading provided to them by their teacher. This strategy is also particularly important for young students from minority backgrounds, who can benefit from comprehensible input that is supplemented by illustrations (Mohr, 2004).
