Adult Views of Sex Education in Schools

e. Unfortunately, this approach fails to recognize the feeling of personal invincibility found in the typical teenaged psyche. Disagreement exists even among those adults who subscribe to the conduct of meaningful sex education for teenagers as a means of combating the problems of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies among the teenaged population. One segment of these adults wants comprehensive sex education courses to be taught in the schools to provide teenagers with the information required to both understand the risks associated with sexual activity, and to know how to protect oneself against the risks of sexually transmitted disease and unwanted pregnancy should a decision be made to become or to remain sexually active. Opposing this approach to sex education is the group of adults who want only to educate teenagers in relation to the risks associated with sexual activity, and avoid providing them with any information to enable them to protect themselves on the grounds that such information will simply spur the sexual appetite. Apparently these adults have never heard of teenaged hormones. Lastly, unfortunately, there is the official position of the Roman Catholic Church that is shared by most Fundamentalist Christian churches that holds that teenagers
